Welcome Back

Welcome back after the Christmas break. Although the snow arrived as we were starting our new theme the children have returned with lots of ideas about ‘Fire’ from research they have done. So we are looking forward to finding out more about Fire in this half term of activities.

Theme this Half Term

The theme “Fire” in Key Stage One has a large historical focus. Whilst history will continue to be the main focus there will be very strong links with Art, Design and Technology and ICT.

Literacy

This half term we will be looking at alphabetical order and writing explanations, with direct links to our theme. We will also look at traditional stories, writing our own imaginative stories and study elements of poetry. We will be continuing work on spelling and reading the sight words appropriate for year 2 children.

Numeracy

The topics will build on last terms work and will include looking at the following 3 areas of work

*Counting, Partitioning and calculating.

*Securing Number facts, Understanding shape,

*Handling data and measures.

Geography/History

This half term we have a history focus and we will be using history skills by using different sources of evidence, placing events into chronological order and recognising why things happened and what happened as a result using the event The Great Fire of London as the stimulus and main aspect of the theme.

Art/DT

In art and DT this term the children will be using a variety of skills. Their main task will be to design and make a Tudor house to later demonstrate the proximity of houses to each other and the rate at which the fire spread. Skills of joining materials, painting including mixing colour and evaluating work will be essential.

Science

In science we will be looking at and investigating different materials and their properties with a main focus on how they change when they are heated.

ICT

In ICT the children will be enhancing their word processing skills and will begin to learn skills of copying and pasting from online to word documents in order to produce effective non-fiction documents linked to their literacy work.

P.S.H.E

Our focus for learning in PSHE is ‘Going for goals’. This will focus on making children aware of how to achieve successes in their own learning, as well as looking at situations and making choices that are appropriate for success to take place.

P.E

In Gymnastics the Y1 children will be working on the module points and patches while Y2 are concentrating on straight, zigzag and curving pathways. Y2 will also be having the opportunity to work with a specialist Gym teacher this half term. Dance work will focus on moving to different musical stimulus to create sequences of moves linked to Chinese dragon dances.

R.E

The story of Moses will be the main focus for learning this half term, through a variety of different activities.

The above subjects will be supported with the use of ICT software as a teaching and learning tool where possible.
