Art

Students opt either for a single or double award:The Art and Design course is intended for those students who wish to make a personal response to their own experiences, environment and culture through both practical and theoretical studies.  It also provides an opportunity for the development of an understanding and practical experience of the role, purpose and function of Art and Design in society.  The course is a valuable experience for -

  • Those students who wish to go on to Art College (or any other Further or Higher Education establishment)
  • Those intending to go directly into industry or commerce (students have left the school and gained employment as junior designers in advertising agencies and photographic studios as a result of work produced in Years 10 and 11 and submitted at interview)

“There are no fewer than 70 careers awaiting those with the seeing eye and the appropriate artistic skill.  Contrary to the belief that Art is useless, it has a vital place in the world where technology is generating an unprecedented demand for good design of graphics and artefacts, industrial equipment and household products.” (‘Education Guardian’)

The course is not just drawing and painting, but involves literacy and problem-solving skills.  Students must expect to have to develop skills and through hard work improve their capability. It is expected that ALL students who opt for this subject will take an examination at the end of the two-year course (G.C.S.E.).

It is a general Art course and a varied programme of subjects and techniques are taught; these may include Drawing, Painting, Graphic Design, Ceramics, Printmaking and 3-Dimensional work.

Pattern of Assessment

The examination grade is achieved by the assessment of three pieces of coursework which have been produced during Years 10 and 11 and a controlled test (on the same lines as the coursework), which is set by the Examining Board and is produced by the candidate over a period of 10 hours under examination conditions.  The coursework and controlled test are assessed together.  Coursework should be completed and handed in to the subject teacher in the week before the Easter holidays, in the second year of the course .  The controlled test paper will be issued to candidates towards the end of February, allowing students four weeks’ preparation before the actual examination takes place.

Applied Art & Design - Double Award(PATHWAYS MAY INCLUDE PHOTOGRAPHY OPTIONS)

This is for those serious about creating a pathway to employment via Higher Education in an Art & Design context.

Please understand that the level of work is exactly the same as the single G.C.S.E. option, but the activities are likely to require a very serious approach and include a wider range of Art & Design skills and will take 2 option blocks to complete.

Pupils will need to be able to write about processes and technologies.By opting for this course students pave the way to Art & Design curriculum in the Sixth Form leading to Degree entry to Higher Education.

Pattern of Assessment

There are three units to be studied over a two year period and projects might include working in Graphics, Photography, Printing, Ceramics, IT, Fine Art, Art History, 3D and Product Design, as well as developing skills in Visual Literacy associated with drawing and painting and 2D activities.
