The week before half term Sandown High golfers Lucy Burke, Greg Hammond, Joe Wright, Matt Mew, Conner Knight and Josh Pannell all met at half past six in the morning and made an early start for their journey to the Royal Winchester golf club on the mainland. The contest was the Hampshire schools individual golf championship, only open to the best golfers from schools and colleges all over Hampshire, boys had to have a handicap below 12 and girls below 22. The weather was good and they arrived at the golf course at half past nine. By midday it was becoming obvious that all our golfers were playing very well and were all in with a chance. As the competition went on Matt Mew emerged as having a very good chance in both the overall championship and the under 16 section. Lucy was palying well and keeping up with the leaders in the girls section. Josh Pannell was playing below his handicap and so he was in a good position for a place in the handicap section. The others were still playing well but the competition was of the highest standard and some of the other competitors were beginning to put the pressure on. At the final count up Matt Mew won the under 16 section making him the county schools under 16 champion outright, he also came runner up in the overall competition. With this win Matt now has the right to represent the county in the all England final next year. Lucy Burke came second in the girls handicap section which was especially pleasing as it was the first time the school has had the opportunity to enter a girl in such a high profile competition. Josh Pannell came runner up in the boys handicap section returning an excellent score 3 below his handicap. Overall Sandown High school scooped four trophies making it one of the most successful years we have had in this event especially as we are already the Hampshire schools team champions, a feat achieved earlier in the year. Well done to all the golfers!!! |
