English Department

Welcome to the English Department at Sandown High School

  • 2009 is an exciting time for the department as we welcome some new staff into the department as well as having some excellent colleagues leading the way forward in English.
  • Our aim as a department is to provide an engaging and challenging curriculum that will allow all students to achieve their best.

Ms Harding leads the department

Teachers with responsibilities in the department are:

  • Ms Dewey – KS5
  • Ms Aske-Harris – KS4
  • Mr Hayter – KS3

Our new colleagues are:

  • Ms A’Bear
  • Mr Nibloe
  • Ms Cansdale

All English teachers can be contacted at school and are keen to be in contact with parents. Please contact the school if you wish to speak to a member of the department.

At KS5 we follow the AQA Syllabuses for English Literature, English Language and English Language and Literature at both AS and A2 Level. Our Key Stage 5 English offer is diverse and allows students to specialise in language study, literature or a combination of both on our new and highly popular Language and Literature course.

At GCSE level our Y11 students follow the OCR English and English literature syllabus.

Our Y10 students are starting the AQA English and English Literature syllabus in light of the Curriculum 2010 changes for English.

Most students are entered for both examinations.

In Year 9 we follow a common programme of study for all classes that allows the department to regularly assess students using APP. We see Year 9 as the essential stage of being ready for GCSE learning. The department is piloting Functional Skills with this year group.
