Leadership

Student leadership is now a strong feature of PE and school sport at Sandham, Lake and Forelands, but particularly at Sandown High School where seven different accredited sports leadership courses operate.
  • However, there is an increasing number of young people who are, even from a young age, seeing the great satisfaction that can be achieved by simply helping others to enjoy sport. Young Leaders courses now run in Lake, Sandham and Forelands and the potential to raise standards in other subject areas is being explored.
  • Collaborating with Maths and English, the Maths Leaders and Literacy Leaders awards will be piloted this year at Sandown High school, following the success of the S.E.A.L student leaders.
The Maths Leader Award is not concerned with using sport to teach maths (measuring distances or timing races for example). Instead the award aims to teach young people how to lead others through basic maths activities (teaching how to add fractions for example) by working to develop their communication, organisation and motivational skills.
  • See Ms Brownbill in Maths for more information.
The Literacy Leader Award teaches leadership skills and enables successful candidates to lead small groups in simple literacy-based activities (for example, teaching the basic structure of a sentence) whilst under direct supervision of their tutor.
  • For more information please contact Mrs Harding in English.

The Leadership Academy is part of a Youth Sport Trust programme to increase the number of young people volunteering and leading groups. The academy is being developed by the Sandown School Sport Partnership.

  • Members of the academy will be assisting to develop leadership within their own schools, as leadership mentors and within PE lessons and after-school clubs. This takes place within the local primary schools at festivals, sports days and after school clubs. Hopefully members will have the opportunity to assist at international events such as the Island Games in 2011 and the Olympics in 2012.
  • 60 young people from key stages 3 and 4 of the partnership schools attended a selection day in Ryde, Sandown and Ventnor areas. The selection day included problem solving activities and leading a practical session for Year 5 pupils from Sandham Middle School.
