Mathematics
"For the things of this world cannot be made known without a knowledge of Mathematics" Roger Bacon
Galileo said that the laws of Nature are written in the laws of Mathematics. It is the job of the Mathematics teacher to unravel some of these laws and inspire pupils to find the beauty in the rest. Mathematics may be the cornerstone for most of the lab sciences and many of the social sciences, but it also teaches us to solve problems, to think logically and to ask the questions that need to be answered, as well as being an interesting and challenging subject within its own right.
- As one of the core subjects of the National Curriculum, every student must study Mathematics. The course can be generally separated into the study of number and algebra, shape and space, data handling and using and applying Mathematics in a variety of contexts. The Functionality of Mathematics is also taught, showing how we use Mathematics, not just number, in the real world.
- Sandown High School follows the Edexcel Examination Scheme at both GCSE and GCE levels. Depending on ability, students follow either the Foundation or Higher course. A Functional Skills Qualification in Mathematics has recently been introduced, with students both being enthused and engaged by its relevance to themselves and the world of work. There is the opportunity for some pupils to study Statistics, again available at both Foundation or Higher level. All courses provide students with stimulating, demanding and enjoyable Mathematics appropriate to their ability.
- The department consists of nine full time members of staff, including Ms Annette Duxbury, Head of Department, and Mrs Anne Gleed, who has responsibility for Key Stage 5.
