Modern Languages
All pupils are expected to study at least one foreign language unless there is a strong specific reason not to do so. A suitable grade at G.C.S.E. in at least one foreign language is extremely desirable for those intending to enter Higher Education. If you are thinking of a career in Teaching, a Language is a must. Proficiency in the highly practical skills and content required for languages will prove most valuable for those entering the fields of Travel and Tourism, Business and Finance, the Professions and the Service Industries. Some skill in using Foreign Language can greatly enhance leisure opportunities. It is Departmental Policy to encourage and organise links, visits and exchanges with our European neighbours in order to promote confidence, tolerance and the cultural awareness of our pupils.
- Two Modern Foreign Languages are currently available to G.C.S.E. level – French and Spanish. Each language involves the same elements: these aim to develop, the skills of Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing in the Foreign Language. Materials used are up-to-date, realistic and challenging. Audio CDs, role-play, pair/group work and videos are important means of providing the practice which real language skills require.
- Able linguists are encouraged to consider continuing the two languages studied in year 9. Foreign language study is enriching and enjoyable. It can lead to a greater understanding of one’s mother tongue. The writing, analysing and communication skills it involves are valuable in a broad field of careers. The examination record of the languages department is excellent. Pupils willing to work are likely to gain very high grades.
French Most pupils will be able to continue successfully with French by following the two-year course leading to G.C.S.E. French is a World Language. In addition, the culture of France provides ample scope for rewarding study and enjoyment. France is a popular holiday destination and an important trading partner with Britain.
Spanish Currently third in the list of the world’s most spoken languages, but set soon to outstrip even English, Spanish is the mother tongue of 21 countries worldwide, from Spain itself to the Caribbean and Latin America. It is also widely spoken through the United States. Spain’s emergence as a powerful member of the EU and the importance of Latin America in the world economy make a knowledge of Spanish highly desirable for business as well as cultural and leisure purposes. The grammatical base of Spanish is similar to that of French.
Assessment Ongoing progress is assessed through tests, written end-of-unit assignments and via formal examinations.
Pattern of Examination The four skills of Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking are tested and can be combined in a variety of ways. Two short course certificates are available, combining either Listening 40% and Speaking 60% or Reading 40% and Writing 60%, or Full course of Listening 20%, Reading 20%, Speaking 30% and Writing 30%.
