Personal Health & Social Education

The course aims to assist pupils in developing their personal and social skills so that they become more able to deal with the demands made upon them by a complex society.  In Year 10 the two main areas of study are sex education and drugs education.  The course is based on providing the skills for sensible decision making and understanding the consequences of one’s actions.  Students are able to understand for themselves the commitment and responsibility a baby requires through the virtual baby.

Sex Education - The topics covered are:

  • Types of relationships - what do people think?
  • Parenthood - what do children need?
  • What is a family?
  • Some problems - STIs, unwanted pregnancies, health issues
Drugs Education - The topics covered are:
  • Drugs awareness
  • The pressures on young people
  • Why and how to say “No”
  • Types of drugs, alcohol abuse, smoking
  • Consequences of drug abuse
  • The Law

In Year 11 the PSHE programme concentrates on careers education and guidance.  It is aimed at making the transition at the age of 16 as easy as possible.  Necessary information on choices is produced by relevant bodies enabling pupils to make an informed choice about their future.  Skills to facilitate the transition are highlighted
